Though Tata Group left the mainstream telecom market, it seems the company prefers to stay behind the curtain as Tata-backed companies continue to grab telecom contracts in the country.
Tata-backed TCS & Tejas Networks are integral part of state owned BSNL's 4G rollout, and future's 5G roll out, infact BSNL's 5G ready 4G core is completely developed indigenously. Now Tejas grabbed a three-year contract from country's third largest telco - Vi to supply backhaul equipment for upgraded 4G network & upcoming 5G network. Back in 2021 Airtel also deployed equipment from Tejas to increase optical capacities in major metro areas.
Jagbir Singh, CTO, VIL, expressed his joy, as he welcomes Tejas as Vi's wireline partner in the journey towards VIL 2.0.
It should be noted that Vi recently made multi-year deals with Nokia, Ericsson and Samsung worth $3.6 billion to beef up 4G infra and deploy commercial 5G network in major 17 circles.
As of December 11, 2024 Vi already deployed Nokia’s AI-powered MantaRay SON (Self-Organizing Networks) solution on its network. The AI-powered multi-vendor network optimization platform uses machine learning (ML) algorithms and self-configuring modules to enhance network performance and operational efficiency. MantaRay SON autonomously analyzes network traffic patterns, detects anomalies, and optimizes resources without human intervention. The MantaRay SON conducts an average of 7,00,000 autonomous changes per day within Vi’s network, allowing seamless integration with Vi’s existing network infrastructure while providing significant flexibility in deployment. This is one of the largest SON deployment globally.
To meet the exponentially rising data demand on the 4G & 5G network, Vi will deploy Tejas' TJ1400 and TJ1600 packet and optical transmission equipment to augment Vi’s backhaul capacities & increase network performance in multiple circles.
The financial details of the deal between Vi & Tejas was not disclosed.
This deal also confirms India's prowess in tech innovation segment, as Tejas is working with all telcos except Jio. Jio has developed its own 5G stack and planned to export the tech to other countries.
Interestingly Airtel remains open to all. They are very much balanced to opt any required technology from anywhere. Recently Airtel did a long haul DWDM (Dense Wave Division Multiplexing) deployment by Texas-based Ribbon Communications.
