Purulia Travel - Ajodhya Circuit

On the way to Ajodhya Hills

In the Ajodhya circuit, the main attraction is the Ajodhya hills. It the eastern most area of Chotonagpur plateau, and extension of the Eastern Ghat range. The area is mostly undulating with scattered hills and forests. There are also several dams and lakes - mostly for irrigation to farming fields. There are several peaks - Mayur/Mayuri Pahar, Gorgaburu, Chemtaburu, Murraburu/Pakhi Pahar, Kana Pahar etc.

If you are visiting Ajodhya in non-winter time, don't make exhaustive trip plan to cover as many as spots. Sunlight & heat would make you sick, if not dehydrated. ☠

☎ Mobile connectivity through the Ajodhya hills is not so good, Airtel & Vi are actually useless. Thankfully Jio is usable in most of the area - basic browsing can be done with bit pause. BSNL is also not good enough with several patches. GPS is also not good enough, as it relies on mobile data, however if your smartphone supports NAVIC, yes that's India made navigation system, you will be best routed using Google Maps. But again Google Maps is not reliable, so better ask to local people for best guidance.

We had planned for Day 1 and Day 2 as Ajodhya sightseeing, and Day 3 we can go to see some of the places of Raghunathpur circuit.

Day 1 - Way to Ajodhya via Raniganj/Durgapur by car (approx 8hr incl. mid stops) - Ajodhya Pahar Hairpin View point, Ajodhya Hilltop, Mayur Pahar, Sita Kund/Senth Kunri, Upper Dam & Lower Dam, Kecha Pahar View Point, Ajodhya Hill View Point(s), Thurga Falls/Dam, Bamni Falls, Marble Lake/Echo Lake/Blue Dam/Neel Dam/Patal Dam/Durga Bera - > night stay at hotels of Ajodhya

Day 2
Deulghata, Jaipur Rajbari/ Pathar Mahal, Muruguma Lake and Dam , Pitidiri Falls, Machkanda Falls, Khairabera Dam, Marubhasa Dam, Chemtaburu Hill Top, Charida Chau Mask Village, Pakhi Pahar -> back to purulia town and night stay there.

Day 3
Futiyari Dam, Rajarajeswari temple   >>> home via durgapur/Burdwan

However plan got jumbled due to some reasons - first we started almost 1.5 hr late, and secondly we got into a political road block.

Day 1
We started journey from Barrackpore at around 8:30 am and chose the route connecting Dankuni, Singur, Saktigarh, Burdwan, Durgapur, Raniganj, Raghunathpur to Purulia town.

There is another route - via Dankuni, Arambag and Bankura town which is around 50km less than the previous one, but the road is not good, and usually takes 1 hr more to reach Purulia town.

Sita Kund
Marble Lake
Night stay at Kalyan Forest Resort

Day 2

Mayur Pahar
Mayur Pahar (in Bengali Peacock Hill) is a hillock in Ajodhya hill area. Many says there was a time when many peacocks were here but now you have to be very lucky to spot a peacock in Mayur Pahar. Going to the top of the Mayur Pahar takes like a mini-trekking along the rocky path (but not very steep) - once you are on the top, you can see a panoramic view of Ajodhya Hill area. In monsoon you might get the clouds around you.

Way to Mayur Pahar Hill-top

Best time to visit here is in the morning which also makes the mini-trekking least tiring. But we went there after having breakfast - it was very sunny. There is a cave on the top - Yogini Cave.

Upper & Lower Dam of PPSP

Purulia Pumped Storage Project (PPSP) was built between 2002 - 2007. Such projects differ from the conventional hydro power projects in two ways - Pumped storage hydropower projects have not one, but two dams of different altitudes and their primary objective is not only power generation but stabilization of power in the grid - thus it helps to flatten the load demand curve.

Bamni Falls

Turga Falls

Charida - Chau Mask Village (চাড়িদা)

Charida is an unique travel spot in Purulia where masks are made for using in folk dances like Purulia's own Chhau dance (ছৌ নাচ) and Kathakali dances. There are three subtypes of Chhau dances - Mayurbhanj Chau does not use a mask, whereas a mask is a part of Serakella Chau and is used extensively in Purulia Chau Dance. The Purulia Chhau dance with mask was popularized by veteran Chau dancers like Gambhir Singh Mura and Nepal Mahato, both of whom were Padmasree awardees.

Making the maskes is just not a profession here, it is more about the family legacy. The heritage of artisan families in Charida was started more than 150 years back, during the reign of King Madan Mohan Singh Deo, who invited 20 Sutradhar families from Burdwan and gave them lands in Charida, they were asked to build the new idols of deities in the palace. These families, settled in Charida, subsequently started making masks for Chau dancers as well, in addition to making deities of the royal family. Today there are more than 150 families are involved in this heirloom industry - all have the stores along the main road with the workshop in the back of the home.

Charida now hosts an annual Chhau dance festival during the winter months - the festival boosts tourism as well as more sale of masks. Apart from the quintessential dance masks which are truly legendary, the artists of Charida also make masks for decoration and souvenirs like pendants, key rings, and palm-sized masks.

Khoerabera Lake
Khoerabera lake is another must visit tourist spot in Purulia. The only reason is the serene nature surrounding the lake.

Back to Purulia Town - night stay

Day 3
Deulghata
Muruguma Lake
Garh Jaypur Rajbari & Pathar Mahal
Back to Hotel, Purulia Town, and return to home

While returning we stopped at Hotel Highway (H5VW+GHV) at Andal for food. Though the hotel is a very minimalistic in approach, it offers good food with simple and short menu. I am mentioned it because of its bill which shows the Plus Codes of Google Maps.

Learnings after my first trip to Ajodhya: The best itinerary for Purulia tour if you go there with your own car.

Day 1: Start the journey by car as early as possible (4 am - 6:30 am) if you are coming from Kolkata, it would help to avoid the jams too. Thus you can reach Purulia town at 10:30 am at earliest (including stops for food, drinks, smoking etc). After reaching at Purulia, get your car's fuel-tank filled, and directly go to Muruguma Lake (or Murguma Lake), which is a part of Saharajore Irrigation scheme. Built over a small tributary of the river Kangsabati, the Murguma Dam creates the lake of same name, named after the nearby village.

It takes around 1 to 1:30 hr from Purulia town and there are two almost equal routes - first one is via Jaypur and Begun Kodar and second one is via Kansai Bridge, Aharara and Begunkodar. I suggest to take the second one.

You can stop at Begun Kodar Rail Station which was earlier thought to be a haunted place. But now it is confirmed that there is no paranormal activities here. Some local people made it so, the ghost tourism was flourished by the youngsters. The rail station was not operational for 42 years, and since 2009 it restarted the operations. The rail station, being shut down for so many years, helped the locals to create the myth that it is haunted.

What to see at Murguma - The lake, the dam, and the hills around it. There is a hill - Kenekeche Pahar.

Murguma Lake is a serene place, and a must-watch tourist spot in Ajodhya hills. There is a hill top viewpoint on nearby hill, which gives a 360 degree view of the lake. Many also call the view point as 'suicide point'.

At Murguma there are several staying options:
Eco Hut Bon Polashi  - www.bonpolashi.com 9874361951
Lal Pahari Eco Resort cum Tent
Palash Bitan Jungle Eco Huts - www.palashbitan.com 9674222675/670

Aranya Kutir Eco Cottage

In the Murguma Village:

Murguma Dam Homestay

From Muruguma you can reach Panrri (পাড়রি) - 12km away, here is Marabhasa Dam, from there you can trek to Chemtaburu (11km trek 3-4hr)  [Guide Sudip Singh 8250197371]

But I suggest not to stay in these resorts at Muruguma**, rather from the highest view point of Murguma Lake you can drive to Ajodhya Hill top over the hills. On the way you can easily cover all these places -

Ajodhya Hill-top
Ajodhya Hill Hair Pin Bends
Marble Lake
Sita Kund
Mayur Pahar
Upper Dam of Purulia Pump Storage Hydral Project
Lower Dam of PPSHP
Laharia Shiva Temple
Bamni Falls
Turga Falls

I suggest you have resort booked on Ajodhya Hills or in nearby Kalyan Village Resort. I stayed at Kalyan and it was a really good experience.

Kalyan Forest Resort (kalyanforestresort.com) - Vill: Kalha, PO: Saharjuri, PS: Baghmundi, Ajodhya Hills 723 152, Mobile: 8240326876

Kushal Palli - a 4-star resort at Ajodhya hill top - www.kushalpalli.in

If you can't cover all of the Ajodhya Hill tourist spots, (for eg in Winters, when dusk comes by 5pm) don't overstretch the trip - return to your base and have evening snacks and dinner at earliest and sleep tight.

** Day 1 Option B - From Purulia directly reach Ajodhya Hills via Kansai Bridge, Aharara and Sirkabad. Before checking out into the hotel, try to visit all spots written above and then go to Muruguma and back to resort by evening.

Day 02: If you've skipped any of the Ajodhya Hill tourist spots, go to these spots just after waking up and back to resort for having breakfast.

Option1 : After the breakfast, plan for cover unusual tourist spots of Ajodhya Hills

Founded in 1440 Jodbangla Temple is near by the Bero Rajbari.
