Jio, OneWeb & Starlink Granted Unified License for GMPCS

In the latest development of India's satcom market, country's Department of Telecom (DoT) has issued Unified License (UL) with authorisation for GMPCS (Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite) service for national service area to 3 companies: OneWeb India Communications Private Limited, JIO Satellite Communications Limited, and Starlink Satellite Communications Private Limited, as informed by Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, Dr Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar in Rajya Sabha on 29th January, 2026. 

DoT is presenting examining application from Amazon Kuiper Services India Private Limited (presently Amazon LEO) while rejected application from Tata-backed Nelco Limited and Hiranandani Group-backed Yotta Network Services Private Limited whereas Connect4sure Technologies Private Limited has withdrawn its application.

Jio Updates: Jio Enters into Satellite Internet Biz

This update which came in February, 2022 is actually a big update, though Jio did it silently - Jio enters into satnet biz by founding Jio Space Technology Limited (JSTL) by creating a JV with Luxembourg based SES (Société Européenne des Satellites). 

Jio owns 51% of the JV, while SES holds the remaining 49%. SES is already an established player in satcom business and newly formed entity will use multi-orbit space networks that is a combination of geostationary (GEO) and medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite constellations capable of delivering multi-gigabit links (upto 100Gbps) and capacity to enterprises, mobile backhaul and retail customers across the length and breadth of India and neighbouring regions.

Indian Telecom - End of 2021 Update


T​​hough Indian telecom sector is having a lackluster show for last few years, but some zeal hopefully returning to the tel-tech sector in next 12-18 months. More excitement comes with government's new plans with telecom including 100% FDI in telecom and relief packages for telecom service providers. 

Broadband Scene to be Changed: Wired vs Wireless (4G/5G) vs Satellite Internet, Airtel's OneWeb vs Jio 5G, OneWeb vs Starlink


Though India's broadband scenario is not comparable with global counterpart, the scene can see lots of improvement. Wired vs Wireless debate is going to over soon, as satnet is coming to India at affordable (not cheap) price.
