List of Camera Sensors Used in Different Smartphones

For future reference purpose post it is. You can also track the evolution of the camera sensors. However I doubt how long I would be updating this post.

This list is made for my future works for easy find.

   ===

As mobile photography is improving, smartphone makers are partnering with lens makers. For eg, Huawei-Leica, OnePlus-Hasselblad, Vivo-Zeiss. But before Android or iPhone hits the market, Nokia did some excellent job during the beginning of mobile photography - Nokia had used Zeiss lens in some of its Symbian phones.

These days most camera sensors are either from Sony (IMX series) or Samsung (Isocell).

There is another thing which are getting popular in high end smartphones - computational imaging by adding AI engine or NPU (neural processing unit). Google has its best with Pixel Neural Core.

It has been learnt that Xiaomi will use Leica's lens in their upcoming smartphones, probably in MIX series, flip phones and Mi flagships. (End of March, 2022 update)

Oppo has developed MariSilicon X chip of 6 nm architecture that includes the NPU, an image signal processor (ISP) and a custom memory architecture, all of which work together to improve the imaging capabilities of mobile photography.

Redmi N9pm -  64MP Samsung ISOCELL GW1 sensor - GW1 is direct competitor of Sony IMX686 (as in Asus Rog Phone 3's 64MP)

Redmi N9p has Samsung ISOCELL GM2 sensor.

Redmi Note 10 pro has 64 MP Samsung GW3 sensor,

RN10 has Sony IMX582 48MP

Redmi Note 10 pro max has 108 MP Samsung HM2 sensor.

Next of IMX686 is IMX689 (OnePlus 8 pro 48MP, Oppo Find X2) - That puts along with Samsung ISOCELL Bright HM1 (S20 Ultra).

Interestingly OnePlus 8T, 8 and Nord all have 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor.

Remember even if you get the best hardware, it is very important that software part handles it well. For eg, Google pushes it basic camera hardware to an exception level only by Google Camera app. Computational photography tech is now matured than ever. Xiaomi uses an AI engine to get better results.

Mi 10T has Sony IMX 682 (64MP)

Mi 10T Pro has Samsung HMX (108MP)

One Plus 9 Pro - 14 mm UW 50 MP IMX766 f/2.2 110° FOV + AF

One Plus 10 Pro - 23 mm main Camera sensor is 48 MP Sony IMX789 1/1.45'' f/1.8 + PDAF + Laser AF+ OIS; 14 mm UW 50 MP Samsung ISOCELL JN1 f/2.2 + AF 150° FOV; 77 mm Telephoto - 8MP f/2.4 + PDAF + OSI (3.3x optical zoom) - Developed jointly by Hasselblad, 3D nano crystal ceramic lens cover.

After Oppo-OnePlus merger, it seems Hasselblad partnership is also extended to Oppo phones, as Find X5 Pro comes with Hasselblad branding.

Oppo Find X5 Pro's Camera sensors:

Primary: 50MP, Sony IMX766, f/1.7, 1/1.56-inch, 5-Axis OIS
Secondary: 50MP, Ultra-wide angle, Sony IMX766, f/2.2, 1/1.56-inch
Tertiary: 13MP, Samsung S5K3M5, 2x telephoto, f/2.4
Front: 32MP, Sony IMX709

It's obvious that 2022's best camera is Pixel 7 Pro. It has:
50 MP (12.5MP) 82° FoV main camera is probably Samsung GN1
12 MP Ultrawide 125.8° (vs 114° on the Pixel 6 Pro)
48 MP telephoto with 5X optical zoom (probably Samsung GM5)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
2023 Updates:

OnePlus 11 - 50MP Sony IMX890 main lens with OIS support + 32MP Sony IMX709 telephoto lens (2x optical zoom) + 48MP IMX581 ultra-wide lens.

Sony IMX890 may be the 2023's flagship choice.
Realme GT Neo 5 probably have IMX890 (though main UPS is 240W charging)

Redmi Note 12 Pro Plus 5G   - 200 MP Samsung ISOCELL HPX sensor with OIS (120 W charging)
Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G - 50 MP Sony IMX766 with OIS

-------------------------------------------------

2025 updates:

OnePlus 15: Main cam Sony IMX906, Telephoto Samsung ISOCELL S5KJN5 50MP CMOS sensor, Wide angle OmniVision OV50D - all 50MP; Front cam 32MP Sony IMX709.

2026 Updates:

Top smartphones for photography - Xiaomi 17 Ultra, Google Pixel 10 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra, vivo X300 Pro, Apple iPhone 17 Pro - run on Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Pro, Tensor G5, Exynos 2600, MediaTek Dimensity 9500, Apple A19 Pro  respectively.

What we all know is Google uses computational photography technology in its Pixel smartphones. That makes to take great photos even with older hardware. I am not going the debate why DSLR or today's mirrorless cameras are not using the smartphone tech. If you use Google Camera app - modified for your non-pixel smartphone, you would love the Night Sight photos taken with Google Camera. AI driven Google's computational photography is definitely an unique selling point (USP) of the Pixel phones, whatever the image sensors are included in the phones. Apple is also using something similar.

Giant killers like Xiaomi or OnePlus are not much active to follow this trend. In my personal opinion Xiaomi phones take the photos with high contrast, even on the high end phones. While OnePlus 6 or 7 which I have used, generates more normal tone photos. Well that's partially true. Xiaomi already using AI on its smartphones - you can check the AI option on the UI of their smartphone camera app.

Xiaomi is working with Leica while OnePlus (now Oppo) is using Hesselbald lens and tech on its flagship phones. vivo is producing photo with Zeiss since their photography centered x80 series.
