Jio's WiFi Networks being Powered by Mojo

Jio since its begining is pushing its WiFi offering - the JioNet. Jio's public WiFi helps them to offload LTE data, and clutter off the network, also helps to serve into offices, educational institutes i.e. enterprise segment.

Interestingly Jio expressed that the company is considering WiFi not as simple as an additional services (as during 2G period), rather it is a partner technology with Jio's pure play LTE based mobility strategy. Jio is now nearly having 2,00,000 hotspots running across the country. Jio and other Indian carriers have already launched Voice over LTE and VoWiFi technology - so offloading voice over WiFi is also in their strategy to overcome mobile signal coverage issues. WiFi calling is quite successful as Airtel and Jio saw the market response. However limited handsets support VoWiFi as of now.

Also offering WiFi means better utilization of Jio's existing Fiber network.

In my knowledge from previous experience, in my area that's in and around Kolkata JioNet and JioPrivateNet are using equipments from Rukus Wireless since the begining. Jio is also using Cisco in other parts of the country.

Last few days, I am checking the WiFi details of JioNet/JioPrivateNet, and I found that Jio is using a new vendor - that's Mojo Networks

I can assume that Mojo is working with Jio atleast since 2017-18, if not earlier. Mojo offers Jio a secure cloud based WiFi solution for its JioNet. Mojo's AI driven WiFi solution works in such a way that ensures even if the cloud system fails for whatever the reason, the individual Wi-Fi nodes will continue to auto-function for time being. Also the solution also able to help the service provider find out the issues with the WiFi.

Pravin Bhagwat, an IITian, established AirTight Networks in 2003. Soon Pravin created a team at IIT Kanpur, and Samir Palnitkar and Kiran Deshpande (that time he was CEO of Tech Mahindra) joined in the company. They hired David King as COO, and made base in Pune, and also in California, and in 2006 they rename the company, as Mojo Networks.

Santa Clara based Aristra acquired Mojo Networks in August 2018. Aristra described Mojo Networks as inventor of Cognitive WiFi™ and a leader in cloud-managed wireless networking.

Andy Bechtolsheim (cofounder of Sun Microsystems), David Cheriton and Kenneth Duda founded Arastra (later renamed as Aristra) in 2004. In 2008 India-born American engineer Jayshree Ullal became CEO of Aristra.

Mojo Networks has a good number of enterprise/corporate clients in India, as well as in America. They are working with Jio and many other corporates, as well as with educational institutes. They are also in government's ambitious project of Smart City as well as in BharatNet. Mojo and QuadGen Wireless are jointly handling WiFi services provided by BSNL.

Kiran Deshpande, Co-Founder & President – Mojo Networks said, “India faces a daunting task in accelerating digitization. At Mojo Networks, we’re committed to providing next generation WiFi to BharatNet. The National Knowledge Network and India’s Smart cities with our massively scalable carrier-class WiFi that’s the only one with best in class security to protect country’s digital infrastructure from WiFi-based cyber attacks. WiFi has been hacked not once but multiple times in India and, therefore, needs the best in class WiFi security technology. Mojo invented wireless intrusion detection and prevention technology that’s used by leading enterprises and Governments around the world. We are keen to showcase a novel and robust WiFi technology for India’s digitization.

I was attached to Telecomtalk til 2015 as a Senior Writer and Analyst, then my professional life absorbed my energy too much to write on telecom. I became an avid reader and watcher to telecom and related tech industry and try to write up on few things which are relevant.
