CDMA Logs

This article is a backup article for any future interest. At present India has no active CDMA service. I had this document long time in my PC, and found in 2019. However I am sharing it as anyone might be interested in CDMA history in India.

Objectives
  • To find out Unified Plans [total freedom on RUIM – one ruim, many devices, single data plan]
  • Availability of  high speed EVDO network at my area
  • Comparison of data networks based upon impressions.

MTS Voice Data Packs

  • Data is enabled on all RUIMs
  • With basic RUIM you only get 1X network access.
  • To get EVDO you have to use OMH RUIM + HSD activated on your no. (Send VASACT HSD to 51230)
  • Data benefit on EVDO is limited to mobile only. But tethering is allowed to use internet on computer. Similarly WiFi hotspot can be made.
  • Data benefit is restricted to 1X if the RUIM is used with EVDO modem.

BSNL CDMA (prepaid)
RUIM – all RUIM are OMH?
No message during the boot of OMH phone F219, but BREW is disabled as well as RUIM Card Tool Kit. I am getting messages to upgrade the RUIM to get data services.
Cost is Rs 20 includes Rs 20 talktime, 30 days validity.
Activation is quite straight forward, done online mostly. I had to call 123 and select language.
What BSNL guys told me: 1X is activated on voice customers. [UN/PS: 165/165], for EVDO on modem, you have to use another RUIM.
Got sms from 1001 with the PIN of my RUIM : 90727890 [with device change it comes, as I put it on modem, I got the same text].
After a data session via modem I got sms from 1001 with balance update.

BSNL CDMA
Only 1X available in my area. Only 1X data plan for mobile – Unlimited usage @ Rs 350 for 30 days. Applicable for using on modem and during national roaming (except Mumbai & Delhi).
On voice enabled RUIM they said EVDO is not activated. To use EVDO you have to pay Rs 250 for activation but the RUIM will be voice disabled.
Reliance CDMA
Reliance has no plan for Internet on mobile – base rate 60p/min (6am-10pm) & 30p/min (10pm-6am). With OMH RUIM you can have EVDO speed on mobile or modem.
Tata Docomo CDMA [Tata Indicom]
EVDO is available in my area, some good plans are also there but I cannot able to connect to internet. L more details below.
MTS India
I used MTS Mblaze before. Overall I was satisfied with its EVDO speed and offerings. But with OMH RUIM I am still not able to catch up EVDO signal.
Notes regarding EVDO activation: Do not send VASACT HSD to 51230 from basic RUIM. First get OMH RUIM and then send the SMS to act EVDO on your no.

Tata Docomo CDMA (formerly Tata Indicom) Internet on Mobile

I used Tata CDMA RUIM (OMH) inserted on Micromax C114 connected to PC via data cable and ZTE AC2766 to connect internet using the username and password as 'internet' and 'internet' respectively. I got the response - Error 691 i.e. username and password is wrong.
Internet is not getting connected over EVDO or 1X. Though internet can be accessed over BREW app –  Opera Mini on Samsung F219.
This username and password is used on Photon+ connection, even other people who are using Indicom RUIM to connect internet is connected to internet using this username and password.
Problem sorting out.....
Customer Care (121): Please visit Tata Indicom Store
Local Tata Indicom Store (Now Tata Docomo Store), Barrackpore: We have no idea, please have a visit to Hub. Hub is on City Center, Salt Lake and on VSNL Building, Ultadanga.

Tata Docomo Hub, City Center: They refered to VSNL Building, Ultadanga - this is the den of Tata Tele and Tata Comm in Eastern India.

VSNL Building, Ultadanga: They informed me that this OMH RUIM is not internet enabled, I need Photon+ Mobile RUIM or Speed Living OMH RUIM to use internet via this mobile no. The guy also informed me that this SL OMH RUIM is currently not available in market (withdrawn in 2010). But he assured me that with this RUIM I can have 5 GB data for Rs 95 on EVDO. He asked me to have a visit to Tata Hub at Dalhousie.

>> Update from Mumbai friend: OMH RUIM with a no. activated before March, 2011 can give internet access on EVDO. Or I have to transfer my no. to a new blank OMH RUIM. I checked the price, it is Rs 149. This is too much as MTS charges Rs 49 for blank OMH RUIM. At this price with zero benefit like added talktime I do not like to get internet access via Tata CDMA RUIM.

CDMA is complex, as it turns more and more complex because Tata Tele made a merger with GSM and CDMA wing. Most guys of Tata Docomo have no idea of sorting out problems with CDMA.

Update: via Duane & Manoj, it was revealed my mobile no activated but data services are not activated on my no.!! From TTSL Customer Desk I got a call and they promised to solve the issue within 24 hours.
Next day I came to know Tata CDMA WAP can be accessed with the U&P as ‘wapuser’ - connection established, but older solution regarding this over internet is obsolete no I cant open a single page.

Truth behind SSTL-TTSL Tie up on CDMA platform

MTS has 2.5MHz (1.25 x2)  spectrum on 800 MHz band, while TTSL has 5MHz (1.25 x4) spectrum on the same band. MTS use both the carrier for EVDO (in Jaipur it is RevB+, other circles it is RevA), and its voice customers use the spectrum of TTSL. Currently TTSL allots 2 carriers for its EVDO RevB and other 2 carriers are for voice customers of its own and SSTL.

So TTSL rents its spectrum to SSTL. Basically it helps the both companies, as TTSL lost many CDMA customers and that under-utilized spectrum is rented to SSTL which gives some money to TTSL.

Why quality of Tata CDMA services has been degraded for last few months?

TTSL is now more focused on GSM. So basically there is no new BTS or no upgradation of BTS (capacity increase) for Tata CDMA. Also no promotion causes them to loose many voice customers.

How is MTS becoming game changer in data business?

Simple answer by lowering the entry point. MBlaze dongles @ Rs 999 and EVDO smartphones starting @4499.
After MTS introduces low cost Android smartphones, GSM players Idea and Vodafone came up with Android Smartphones at similar range. 3G/HSPA dongles are also getting cheaper. 3.6Mbps dongles comes around Rs 1000 and 7.2Mbps ones are at Rs 1500, 21Mbps ones are now at around Rs 2500-Rs 3000.

Future of Indian Telecom

1. No roaming - One Country, One Circle
2. zero call termination charge  - Unlimited onnet calling, offnet calling less than 15p/min
3. Fixed broadband moves to Fiber platform at most areas
4. 2G/1X unlimited usage at Rs 50
5. 3G - home & roam data - flat rate (FUP 10GB/25GB) @ Rs 150/Rs 300
6. 4G - 1GB/Rs 50, 100GB @Rs1000.
