Flipkart is NOT Cheap, Others Offer Cheaper than it

Flipkart is not that cheap!

When I came to know about Letsbuy.com and its coupons, I find Letsbuy is way cheaper than Flipkart. Later I also find that electronics are cheaper on Letsbuy, even if the product is at same price, Letsbuy is offering some value-for-money gifts (like Nikon P500 gets 16GB memory card on Letsbuy).

But still for books I thought Flipkart gives me ultimate deal. As COD is withdrawn from many cities by Flipkart, it has now no speciality for me.

Worst part is other online sellers are selling books at lower price than Flipkart. I recently mailed to my friends regarding the high pricing by Flipkart with an example of Desperate Dubai Flipkart @Rs 224, Tradus.in @Rs 212, and Infibeam.com @ Rs 179.

Google+ Comes With Photo Importer from Orkut

I am not a regular Google+ users, mostly because I get info from twitter stream and keep in touch with friends & relatives who are mostly on facebook.

Today I uploaded some photo for Google Photography Contest and find this option to import photos from Orkut to Google+ - You can directly visit this page: http://www.orkut.co.in/AlbumsExport

It is a nice feature but it also tells the fact in coming days (may be in 2013 or 2014) Orkut may vanish from web world.

µTorrent+ - Paid Version of uTorrent

µTorrent plus
This is the latest offering from BitTorrent, and yes it is paid. Thankfully our all time favourite lightweight bittorrent client - uTorrent will always be free of cost.

We must recall the fact that BitTorrent bought uTorrent in 2006. Following this the basic uTorrent installer size increases with new updates. BitTorrent client also started using uTorrent core and significantly reduced the installer size. And there are some unnecessary features are also added with uTorrent, which I personally do not like. To me uTorrent is the simplest application I have ever met on Windows platform.

For Indians, uTorrent is a boon to have the all foreign media stuffs easily. Now desi stuffs are also widely available over torrents. Though some may stump these as piracy, being in a 3rd World Country we love to download!

This plus version includes:
  • Integrated BitDefender-based antivirus will scan your downloads for threats.
  • An integrated HD media player displays videos in their full high-definition glory.
  • If the file you’ve found isn’t in a convenient format, then uTorrent Plus will quickly transcode it to something else. Initial support for the MPEG-4, H.264, Theora, and VP8 video codecs, and MP3, AAC and AC-3 audio codecs should make it easy to convert the file to something Apple, Android or just generally mobile device-friendly.
  • And if you’re away from home then you’ll be able to use the uTorrent Remote Web service to remotely access and download any file from your home torrent library (once you’ve set the feature up, anyway).

More details of uTorrent plus.

Videocon GSM Mobile Services in Kolkata

So Videocon GSM services are now in Kolkata. Their network is live for months over my area [405 833]. There is no news comes as official that Videocon enters in Kolkata. Though as per COAI data they are already West Bengal and have some subscribers, just like Loop has some customers in Kolkata. I am still not sure that it is a soft launch and official launch is coming in a month.

Even the retailers are not sure about the tariff or official launch. They informed me that Videocon is still searching for a distribution channel before gearing up with its GSM launch.

The new Videocon SIM is available for Rs 10 in selected stores. It includes 350 minutes of local talktime. No details of other specs are known!

BSNL Mobile CDMA is Already in Town

If you check Telecomtalk's mobile codes page, you will find BSNL Mobile CDMA. The fact is BSNL was offering voice over CDMA via Fixed Wireless Phone (FWP)/Wireless Landline (WLL) with 8 digit no. BSNL has started its CDMA Mobile services in circles silently.

In Kolkata BSNL is offering Mobile services on CDMA for some time. But almost zero advertisement (except from the ones in BSNL Exchanges) makes people not aware of it.

New BSNL prepaid CDMA Mobile connection comes at just Rs 20. The RUIM comes with preloaded Rs 20 talktime in main account and 30 days validity and grace period of 15 days after the 30 days. 1X data services is also pre-activated on the mobile no.

Balance can be checked by dialing 123. The PIN of the RUIM will also be SMSed when you put it on a device (mobile/modem).

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Is the RUIM of OMH technology?

Reliance EVDO - It is Cool & Fast

So I started digging out EVDO/CDMA operators in my town. And see what I got with Reliance EVDO.
I was downloading stuffs via IDM and see the screenshot!

It is NetWorx graph, which is better than single IDM screenshot. Max speed was 346kBps and most of the time speed was more than 200KBps! Reliance CDMA truly rocks! :)

Well, last time I used Reliance Netconnect+ dongle and speed was merely 32kBps around, max I got 40kBps. But now Reliance truly is cool and fast!

Simply MTS Can Not Leave Voice Market

Recently I posted a story on Telecomtalk.info with a title of MTS Plans to Shut Down Voice Services, Our Take, as it was hinted by Cheenu Seshadri, Chief Operating Officer-South & West Region at MTS in an interview with Light Reading.

Last year he also had another interview with the Hindu, where he expressed his love for data, as he quotes: 'Our strategy is data, data and data'.

Whoops! we know that data is the future, but right now you can not ignore voice. Though I explained on the post why, I am making it here simple and point wise to better understanding.

1. Even 4G player Reliance Infotel is looking for voice partners, so leaving voice can be suicidal. Even in rural areas there are hugh scope of market tapping, with CDMA 800 MHz spectrum MTS can reach the rural masses with cheapest handsets and special rural plans.

TechTree Reviews Ra.One, Rockstar, Kunal Guha's Review System Unscientific

Long waited SRK film Ra.One came to cinemas in Diwali 2011. With its promos it did not impress me. But I had to see this crap because of my family who wanted some celebration of Diwali+Weekend!

I watched it, but can not digest it at all! It is a super crap! That time I liked to have some expert comments! So I googled it! Taran Adarsh gave it good marks - that is kind of well gesture to SRK, and some kind of paid review as I thought.

My Hands-On With All GSM Data Services in Kolkata

With two 3G modems at hand – ZTE MF190 and Huawei E1550 I tried all available GSM players available at Kolkata circle. I did experimenting with their 2G packs and come to an conclusion that Uninor & BSNL is best at my home place, Barrackpore. I did not try my hands with 3G players, as they are costly and beyond the reach of most users.

MTS offers bonus to customer care exec for convincing subscribers recharge more

I am using MTS mobile since June 2009 and MTS Mblaze dongle (EVDO wireless broadband) since July 2010. MTS at Kolkata as well as in WB is going great. I don't have complain for MTS network.

I use around 120 bucks per month on MTS mobile - which includes daily Re 1 rental for 100 sms per day to any number in India. It is more than MTS's ARPU. So I am high ARPU customer!

But I seldom recharge my MBlaze connection. I just keep it alive by fulfilling their 6 month condition of minimum recharge of 200 bucks. Only plan of MBlaze that I like is Rs 295 for 10 GiB at weekends for 30 days.

Recently I got two calls from MTS asking or pushing me to recharge more.

I go the 1st call from MTS, the person on the other side is certainly an asshole. He started the convo like this: Hello Sir, I am from MTS. Why don't you like to have caller tunes services?
WTF is this! It is my opinion to take these fucking bullshit VASs and who the hell are you I should explain to?!
Whatever I told him just these things more politely and he was sounded like messed up and said: Ok Sir! and  put the phone down! :)

I often get sms and calls from MTS's MBlaze section. They call me for changing my prepaid account to postpaid ones or informing me to send home services of MBlaze recharges (= they push me for recharge soon). But this time a Sumit called me and asked: Sir, when will you recharge your mblaze account. I told him that I want more data usage at cheaper price & validity can be of 7 days and as MTS has no such plans except STV295 I do not like recharge it anytime soon. He started luring me with plans which are crap with FUP of 1GB & then speed throttling. I told him I want speedy connection and MTS 1x network is already congested with voice customers. That time he started fumbling as I think he did not have this technical knowledge, and asked the same question again, when will you recharge? I told not any time soon....

After these 2 calls attended by me, I think MTS is pushing its CC execs for convincing customers for more recharges ! :)

What do you think ?

Problems With ZTE Modems and Solutions

Before you read it, please be informed that never buy or recommend ZTE GSM-3G/HSPA/HSDPA/HSUPA modems. ZTE modems/data cards are good enough for EVDO/CDMA-1x devices, but not for GSM ones! For 3G/HSPA modems go for Huawei ones!

I am currently using ZTE MF190 – the similar device offered by Reliance 3G in India or Cell-C in South Africa. It is a HSUPA device – supports upto 5.76 Mbps uplink and upto 7.2 Mbps downlink.

There are many problems you may face with the device, the problems are similar to many other ZTE 3G modems. First of all ZTE modems come up with a UI/dashboard which does not support USSD.

To run USSD on ZTE modems, I tried to use AT-commands using different softwares like HyperTerminal or Putty. All tests went in vain. At last I got MDMA (www.nerve.org.za), which supports ZTE modems partially. Under QoS you can not see speed

3G Avalibility in West Bengal

Kolkata has 4 3G operators - BSNL, Reliance, Aircel, Vodafone while West Bengal has 5 3G operators - BSNL, Reliance, Aircel, Airtel, Vodafone.

In Kolkata all operators commercially rolled out 3G services. It is expected Airtel will enter into spectrum shareing & roaming agreement with Vodafone to offer 3G services in Kolkata. Idea Cellular already promised to give a nation-wide 3G roaming, and thus 3G services on pan India basis.

I am not adding more to it. But certainly it is a good news for those are like to try Android by any means.

Flock, the social browser died, as Zynga infected it! via FavBrowser. R.I.P. Flock

Just to add, Flock was aquired by Zynga. Yeah Zynga is the company that makes Ville games. Thank god, I am now not addicted to Farmville! Zynga will deploy Flock developers to develop social games. Whatever I am never a fan of Flock or Firefox! (but I support Mozilla and its Firefox to kill IE. ) Interesting news is RockMelt (some people think it's the new face of socialism :P ) - Chromium based browser released Beta 2.

Oh damn Opera released its v11.10 of desktop legend. via Desktop Team Blog

Bengali Films Remade from South Indian Films

Though I made the caption as 'REMADE', these days commercial bengali films are just mere scene-to-scene copy and paste from south Indian films (Tamil/Telugu/Kannada etc). Sometimes same music and location are also used.

Raj Chakraborty of Mirakkel fame is making his films which are just copy of south Indians films. * marked films are directed by him. Now everyone is doing the same thing, why Raj gets all criticism! Also I checked some of telefilms of Raj, those are quite good. I seriously don't know why he is doing these shits.

At the same time, bengali film industry is continuing showcasing good films like Antaheen, Autograph, Kagojer Bou, 22se Srabon etc etc ...

Facts of BSNL Broadband (as I find)

Some facts regarding BSNL Broadband , based on my experience (updated on 14.02.2011)

..... so if you're reading this one. please note I live in Kolkata . so facts are based on services at Kolkata.

  • BSNL Broadband is operational under NIB-I & NIB-II . and these two National Internet Backbones have different IPs , NIB-I IPs start with 59.X.X.X and NIB II IPs look like 117.X.X.X

Watch your IP Address below :

And these two systems are managed differently, as NIB I customers can manage their BB services via http://www.dataone.in/ or http://10.240.43.216 or http://10.240.128.195 .

Where NIBII users can manage their service via http://data.bsnl.in or http://bbservice.bsnl.in (there are another IP based log In site for NIB II - I cant remember that one right now !!). NIB II users can't log in the sites for NIB I, nor do NIB I users !

MVNO in India - Are Virgin & T24 Really MVNO?

MVNO [Read more on Wikipedia] in India is not active. Though often we mistook Virgin Mobile India & T24 as MVNO on TTSL's CDMA & GSM network.

Actually that's not true, pan India MVNO license is priced Rs 85crore. Neither VMI & T24 is taken this license.
Rather both of them are products from Tata Teleservices (TTSL).

VMI (www.virginmobile.in) is TTSL's youth focused brand, here TTSL uses Virgin brand name for its own product.
T24 or Talk24 (www.t24mobile.com) is also TTSL's product specially for Future grp customers. T24 is a kind of royality program from Future Grp.

CDMA In India – Past, Present And Future

In midst of the controversy of 2G spectrum scam and excitement of 3G and MNP, India’s telecom watchdog TRAI released active user’s base of all telecom operators based upon Visitor Location Register (VLR).

This heats up the old arch rivalry between GSM and CDMA operators on spectrum issue. Though this study is not good enough to comment on, as TRAI did not specify any time period for VLR, but it shows Airtel, Vodafone and Idea has more than 75% active subscribers in their network compared to Reliance has 66% and Tata Teleservices (TTSL) has 45% – below than 70% of total active subscribers, based on September 2010 data

Following this, COAI – the lobby of GSM operators (mostly Airtel, Idea and Vodafone) hit back AUSPI (union of CDMA operators, face of TTSL and RCom) saying as they have more active customers and thus need of spectrum for them is logical and they do not hold extra spectrum as TTSL accused them. Note that existing policy gives a maximum of 15 MHz of airwaves per circle to GSM players; while the limit for CDMA players is 7.5 MHz.

Recently TDSAT rejects TTSL’s appeal for taking back extra airwaves from GSM players.CDMA had helped mobiles to reach masses of India via Reliance India Mobile, but now CDMA is not first choice of India, as it is said. But fact is it also could be GSM, if Mukhesh Ambani led Reliance Infocomm chose it.

CDMA got mass acceptance due to operator’s marketing strategy in a GSM-predominant market. At the same time CDMA gave them some advantages also like efficient spectrum use, greater coverage area, superior voice quality and security than GSM. Reliance Infocomm pioneered in pushing mobiles to masses, the whole thing turns better when lifetime prepaid validity comes, multi SIM handsets launched and new operators bring rock bottom tariff.
