The Epic Browser is the first-ever web browser for India and the first product from Bangalore based software company Hidden Reflex. Alok Bhardwaj is the CEO and Founder of Hidden Reflex.
The main reason to bring Epic browser is to create the most secure, most productive and most “Indian” browsing experience of any web browser!
Epic Browser's salient points: [italics are my comments]
- based upon Mozilla Firefox and so on Gecko Engine.
- dubbed as the first web browser from India.
- includes antivirus (claims to be world's first antivirus browser) - additional download of 25MB. AV is backed by ESET, maker of NOD32 Security products.
- Default theme is Firefox Persona which is further added with some many Indianisms.
- Default Skin and appeance (screenshot below) is found to be very dark. I don't like it. But with Epic you can change the wallpaper (like Opera Browser) and can make your custom theme with Header and Footer of your choice. You can see their is no Epic icon at left upper corner to save space.
- Epic has a sidebar at left side, on its FAQ it is clearly mentioned that you can not replace it to right or bottom ! :(
- Epic Write : as they claim it a fully featured Word Processor, I don't find it is great to handle .txt, .doc, .html and .htm. But it is great if you want to write in Indian languages, I tried with Bengali and experience is good enough - can be saved as text or html file. I don't think it's an alternative to Opera's Notes, Epic Write is more complex and for Indic language support.

Updates - Post 2010
Epic was lost in the internet, I mean I stopped using it.
Later in 2013 (August 29) the company announced the browser engine shift from Gecko to Chromium as the trend was going. But Epic browser was built using the Chromium source code and removes most of Google's tracking elements.
But Epic did something OG - it became famous for its free proxy or VPN offering along with other privacy focused options. Though when Epic added this feature is not clear, I guess before 2015. Compared to that, Opera added free, built-in VPN to its desktop browser in 2016. Epic Browser became Epic Privacy Browser.
For monetization they launched their own search engine option. Epic Browser has only 2 search engine options - Yahoo and Epic. EpicSearch is ad-free, requires registration and costs $2.50 per month.
But my interest on Epic dies, as on 23-07-2025 Epic announced that, "The VPN / encrypted proxy service is no longer supported. With our most recent release the past few days, we have stopped supporting the VPN / encrypted proxy service as it had gotten too time consuming & expensive. It lets us focus on the core browser updates." Instead they are offering free or paid VPN as extensions. I tried their free options - just not the thing!
EPIC REVIEW IS NOT COMPLETE. IT'S A ONGOING PROCESS. RELOAD THE PAGE TO CHECK MORE UPDATES
