11 Things Jio did to Indian Telescape; How Others React to Jio

Reliance Jio came, and broke many rules of Indian telecom but the biggest question is can Jio sustain the hype created by itself? Jio during its journey ongoing, has created many milestones and reshaped the Indian telecom sector which turned out to be offering lowest data price in the world, and removed the un-serious or smaller players from the mobile turf (like RCom, Telenor, Tata Tele, Videocon, Aircel).

Jio does not aim for becoming a simple mobile service provider, it's a brand focused on digital sector - and the tagline says it all, 'Jio - Digital Life'.

Let's see the impacts of Jio and what Jio achieved so far:

1. Jio is the biggest greenfield LTE rollout in the world. Started from scratch Jio built everything - towers, fiber network before the launch.

2. VoLTE-only Network: Unlike many major operators across the globe, who offers data on LTE and voice goes via fall back to 2G/3G network, Jio relied only on VoLTE, a newer technology which was not tested much, even on global level at the time of launch.

3. Free Trials with Potential Customers: Jio brought completely free offer for LTE testing continued for 6 and more months, thus brought a superior technology to masses very smoothly.

4. Thanks to their free offer Jio is turned to be the fastest growing operator

5. Single Plan for data/text and call: Plans from JIO were completely new concept for Indian telecom - single recharge can fulfill your month's need (includes outgoing unlimited in home & roam, unlimited texts and unlimited data with fair usage policy) - that de-cluttered Indian mobile market which was full of recharges - one for talktime, one for topup, one for cheaper calls, one for texts, one for roaming etc etc. and those too with different validity periods.

6. Jio has three LTE networks (on 2300, 1800 and 850 Mhz) live catering you for best indoor and outdoor coverage.

7. Jio was pioneer of app based ecosystem on Indian telecom - it reduces the load on customer care services, as well as destroys the existing ecosystem of value added services. In other words VAS has now found a new, better, userfriendly and advanced platform to grow, and here content is the king.

JioTV and JioCinema were instant hit. To get the content Jio Music division opted to merge with Saavn.

To be more clear, content is now priority for every major global telco - and they are investing on it heavily. For eg, American telecom major Verizon created Oath Inc and under this umbrella they own AOL (in 2015) and Yahoo! (in 2017).

8. Jio killed the competition after its commercial launch. Telenor and Tata Tele are to merge with Airtel while Vodafone and Idea are to merge together. That way the telecom market is now consolidated into only 5 players - Airtel (+Telenor+Tata Tele), Vodafone/Idea, Jio and BSNL/MTNL. It's not exactly killing the competition but somehow it removes non-serious players and consolidates the market.

9. Jio killed the imported smartphone market heavily and also destroyed the data card market (EVDO and 3G players). And as data card segment fails, CDMA players stopped functioning. [Read more: CDMA Sunset] But Jio launched its own WiFi devices - JioFi which controls majority of Hotspot/WiFi/data card market in India.

10. However Jio's best act is to cut down cost of wireless data. Once 1GB 3G data was priced at Rs 350 and now for Rs 399 you can get unlimited data (~ 1.5 GB high speed data per day) along with unlimited voice and text from most of the operators in the country. Wireless broadband scenario has been changed, as well as smartphone penetration has gone to a certain level that one can only think during the early 3G era. OTT Digital Media Netflix praised that role of Jio in India as, every country needs a Jio!

11. Jio Branded phones (and smartphones): Jio had introduced a new range of smartphones in India - LYF, which had a demand in initial days and ultimately LYF is a fail for Jio.

However Jio had a comeback with 4G feature phone - JioPhone. Interestingly Jio now holds the top position in the feature phone market with JioPhone. Running on KaiOS, JioPhone takes 27% of feature phone market in India in the Q4 of last year while next competitor Samsung stands at 13%.

Well these are the 11 things Jio did make a change worth to notice and note down. But other players with serious root in the market don't sit idle.

Under 'Project Leap' Airtel is transforming its assets into finer ones - increasing network coverage at a great speed, deploying carrier aggregation and MIMO for better bandwidth availability on its LTE networks, launching VoLTE from city to city. Airtel's LTE offering is now often better than Jio in many cities, though VoLTE from Airtel is still patchy.

That is definitely scary to Jio and the dream run can be halted anytime. Because when you are paying for services which is not upto the mark you'll stop using it. And many customers already left Jio once free usage were over or keep it as 2nd SIM.

Jio responded with tariff cut and so others - Airtel, Vodafone and Idea followed it. Even 3G players - BSNL and Aircel revised their tariffs to match Jio's offerings (and Aircel announced bankruptcy in February 2018).

Many voice-only customers like the older people were not using Jio as Jio is charging for data also in their plans when they don't need data. JioPhone's new tariffs are made to fill that gap. And Airtel came with voice only plan soon after (Rs 299 gives 45 days of unlimited calling with 100 text per day).

Even these carriers are now backed by their own content apps like Wynk, AirtelTV from Airtel, VodafoneTV from Vodafone India.
