Agartala (Tripura) : Food Life

Ujjayanta Palace (উজ্জ্বয়ন্ত প্রাসাদ), Agartala, Tripura

In the end of January 2018, we had a trip to Tripura, specifically its capital Agartala to attend one of our college senior's wedding.

Apart from visiting the a few tourist spots, I being a foodie just had walks across the city of Agartala. Agartala is a small city, and there are few food joints which can be explored in few sessions if you have partners.

Lunch on the Day 2 of our trip was planned by us and it was to visit New Ashoka Hotel for their tribal cuisines. If you are already being hit by Kolkata's food places you would find the menu similar to that of Santa's Fantasia. Anyway here it's cheap and I found that tastier.

We had bamboo biriyani - flavor and smell is just awesome. You might understand that due to bamboo juice infused into the rice and mutton the flavor is bit less salty. However adding salt will be a mistake, as it would kill the actual taste and aroma of it.

Curley's

That's new age restaurant is famous for its music-filled ambience. There is no live music but when we entered they started playing music on boxes. We took a Crab Masala and Squids.

Hotels and Restaurants we didn't visit but recommended by locals:

Neelnod at Hotel Sonar Toree - seems like a 3 star hotel which can provide you fine dining experience. (we did have a look from outside walking beside it)
Mairang - good for tribal and chinese cuisines.
Eatopia Zannat - at top of City Center, it may be your choice if spending time with special ones.
Khunti Kadai - for Bengali cuisine.

Sankar Hotel (near Netaji Chowmuhuni) - for Bengali cuisine, famous for its fish offerings.

Street foods are there and ample in number - fuchkas, sand fried peanuts and chanas, neemki, ghumni and etc. They are mostly comes on wheels and leave after 9:30pm. Momo stalls are there in good number. As it was winter there were some Pithe stalls too on the wheel.

Pork lane of Agartala

Agartala is quite planned city, and it has many four way crossing - which they call as Choumuhuni (in Bengali Choumatha). The pork lane is located at Bhagaban Thakur Choumuhuni. But it is fondly known as Suor (=pig) Choumuhuni. We opted an Toto rickshaw (electric rickshaw with 4+1 seats) and asked him to take us Bhagaban Thakur Choumuhuni, he said, "Oh Suor Choumuhuni!".

The area has some raw pork meat sellers and a few (4-5 in total) stalls that sells Pork Bharta. Yes, that's the popular item here. It's spicy, full of pieces of onion and tastes just great with rootis if you got it warm. In winter you are in tough luck to get them warm.

You can also pack it and get it warmed at home/hotel to have it with drinks or just regular dinner. Oh I forgot to tell that they are opened by 5pm only and after 7:30pm you may not get the best pork pieces. Apart from Bharta, one stall serves chicken items too - it also offers pork bhuna, pork in sauce (tastes tangy and sour) and pork palang. All items are full of chillis.

Rahul's Eggcake and Halim

It's again a small stall on wheels, and stands everyday in winter (don't know about summer) near City Center. You may skip it unless you are very much watchful while walking across the street. Unexpected discovery and it's worth!

Chatpata

We visited this place on the last day of our trip and that's for the lunch. We ordered Dum Biriyani, Egg Fired Rice and Duck Meat Curry.

Dum Chicken Biriyani comes with two pieces of chicken meat, and tastes good. Egg fried rice is also good, if not awesome. But here the special mention is Chatpata's duck meat curry - excellent tasty. The duck meat was so neat and tender!
